...falls down with severe hip arthritis? Our dog tries to bite us because pain is so bad. Only a muzzle can prevent that, but once he's fallen it's impossible to get it on him.

If you can, give him some pain medication while he is still down. Let it get to work and then try and move him.

You could also fashion a sling that he can wear around his middle with some handles attached, then pick him up by that when he falls.

If he is in this much pain, you may want to consult the vet. It's a question of quality of life at this point rather than quantity. If he is trying to bite the people he loves when they are trying to help him, he must be in a great deal of pain.

Do you have a sling? That was the only way I could get my dog from a laying position when her hips got really bad.

The loops slip around the dog's back legs & you just lift them up. It gives them support & takes pressure off painful areas. It was a life saver for me. I couldn't physically pick up my dog because she was a large breed.
